Stewarding Resources

More churches than ever are realizing that reducing your energy footprint is not only a way to live out Christian commitments, but also cheaper. The resources below will help any church get started.

Earth Care Congregations

Although written by the Presbyterian Church (PCUSA), their Earth Care Congregations program is the best I’ve seen for helping churches take stock of the entire spectrum of ways they interact with creation as a church body (in facilities, worship, education, and outreach). The application has a thorough checklist to use to get started, and the guide will give you next steps.

Greener Congregations

Although a little less robust than the Earth Care Congregations, the Mennonite Greener Congregations program is more accessible and has discussion guides to walk churches through all of the sectors of creation care: leadership, worship, facilities, daily life, ecology, and eco-justice. I also recommend their tips for making a church garden and voluntary carbon tax.

Blessed Tomorrow

Blessed Tomorrow is one of the largest coalitions of denominations for action on climate change. Their Moving Forward guide to Climate Action has stewardship advice, but has a broader focus to include advice on climate advocacy with legislators and community members. Their carbon offset program is one of the easiest you can find.

Several other denominations and organizations also have their own programs for congregations to opt into if you’d like to, like the UCC’s Creation Justice Church and Carbon Neutral Guide, DoC’s Green Chalice, Catholic Energies, and Interfaith Power and Light’s Cool Congregations.
