Creation care worship services and liturgies

Whether you want to have a worship service about creation care for your church, or plan a service as part of a protest , you don’t have to come up with it yourself. Numerous organizations and denominations have published outlines that you can pull from. A particular favorite of mine is this communal prayer for climate grief from the UK group Christians for Climate Action.

If you want to plan a worship service as a part of a climate protest, quite a few groups have laid the groundwork for you. A member of Young Evangelicals for Climate Action prepared this liturgy for the 2014 People’s Climate March in NYC. Christian Climate Action in the UK has prepared several services for their Extinction Rebellion protests, including their Litany for the Earth and several prophetic poems against the current power system.

The Christian Reformed Church’s Office of Social Justice has published three worship guides: one about God the Creator, one intended to be performed outside, and a collection of responsive readings.

The international Christian conservation group A Rocha has a great tradition called Good Seed Sunday, which takes place after Earth Day every year. The worship guide is great for churches who emphasize taking communion and features a hefty index of potential readings.
